Café de los maestros: El tango cuenta su historiaPor Diego BatlleCafé de los maestros, coproducción argentino-brasileña-estadounidense, de Miguel Kohan, ha sido producida por tres figuras imprescindibles del cine latinoamericano actual, Lita Stantic, Gustavo Santaolalla y Walter Salle. El proyecto se basa en la convocatoria de las principales figuras entre las viejas glorias tangueras para participar de un álbum producido también por Santaolalla.
El filme es un cuidado y sensible registro de algunas anécdotas personales, de las sesiones de grabación del disco homónimo realizadas en los estudios ION y del impresionante concierto que en el Teatro Colón ofrecieron viejas glorias del tango, desde Horacio Salgán hasta Mariano Mores, pasando por Emilio Balcarce, Ernesto Baffa, Atilio Stampone, José Libertella, Osvaldo Berlingieri, Leopoldo Federico, Virginia Luque, Lágrima Ríos, Alberto Podestá, Nelly Omar y Ubaldo de Lio, entre otros.
Kohan construye un sobrio relato que se sigue con fluidez e interés, apoyado en los registros que muchos fotógrafos de inmenso talento —Guillermo Nieto, Marcelo Iaccarino y Diego Poleri, entre otros— consiguieron con su cámara urgente, tratando de captar la inmediatez, la espontaneidad y la emoción de esos encuentros humanos y musicales únicos e irrepetibles entre leyendas vivientes que cargan sobre sus espaldas con una parte muy importante de la historia del tango argentino.
La mística porteña con sus costumbres, sus pasiones deportivas y su arquitectura, los bailes en las milongas y la insoslayable veta melancólica también forman parte de un largometraje que, de todas formas, evita durante buena parte de su hora y media caer en el pintoresquismo for export, aunque su limitado metraje impide desarrollar en profundidad las riquísimas historias de vida de estos músicos que en todos los casos superan con holgura los 70 años y que en algunos están muy cerca de los 100.
Por las viñetas y pinceladas que se ven en pantalla, por la riqueza de sus vidas y de sus obras, cada uno de ellos merecería una película entera. Quizás una versión más amplia para DVD o para televisión puedan completar lo que aquí se vislumbra y que de por sí ya es apasionante.

The Argentine-Brazilian-American co-production, Café de los maestros by Miguel Kohan, has been produced by three essential figures of contemporary Latin American cinema, Lita Stantic, Gustavo Santaolalla and Walter Salle. The project is based on the call of the leading figures from the old glories of Tango music to record a tango album produced also by Santaolalla.
The film is a careful and sensitive account of some personal anecdotes from the recording sessions of the titled album at the ION studios and of the impressive concert offer by the old glories of the tango at the Teatro Colón, from Horacio Salgán to Mariano Mores, including Emilio Balcarce, Ernesto Baffa, Atilio Stampone, José Libertella, Osvaldo Berlingieri, Leopoldo Federico, Virginia Luque, Lágrima Ríos, Alberto Podestá, Nelly Omar and Ubaldo de Lio, among others.
Kohan builds a sober story that is followed easily and with interest, supported by the records that many photographers of immense talent - Guillermo Nieto, Marcelo Iaccarino and Diego Poleri , among others- managed to express with their urgent camera, trying to capture the immediacy, spontaneity and excitement of these unique and unrepeatable human and musical encounters between living legends who carry a very important part of the history of Argentine tango.
The mystique of Buenos Aires with their customs, its sports passions, and architecture, the dances in the milongas and the unavoidable melancholy streak are also part of a film that, however, avoids, during much of its running time, to indulge in the picturesque vision for tourists, even when its limited footage prevents the film from developing the very rich life stories of these musicians who in all cases widely surpass the 70s and in some cases are close to 100 years of age.
For the little scenes and passages shown on screen, for the richness of their lives and their works, each of these figures deserves a whole movie. Perhaps a larger version for DVD or TV could complete what is here announced and which is in itself exciting.
