  • Camilo Luzuriaga
    (Ecuador, 1953)



    Director de cine, productor y guionista,  nació en Loja, Ecuador, en 1953. Luzuriaga participa como actor de teatro en el Grupo Ollantay entre 1971 y 1976. Más tarde se dedicará a la fotografía.

    Trabaja como fotógrafo desde 1971 con varias  exposiciones individuales. En este campo fue organizador del Primer Encuentro Nacional de Fotografía Contemporánea, en 1982.  Se desempeñó como profesor de fotografía en la Facultad de Artes de la Universidad Central del Ecuador de 1982 a 1987, y de Imagen en la Facultad de Arquitectura y Diseño de la Universidad Católica del Ecuador, desde 1994. Ha sido, además, profesor de cine en el Taller de Cine y Actuación de Grupo Cine.

    Luzuriaga es uno de los pocos ecuatorianos que, contra viento y marea, produce cine y desde hace años está dedicado exclusivamente a este arte. En 1977 dirige Tierra cañari, su primer cortometraje documental. A partir de los años ochenta es el director más activo de Ecuador. Entre otros, realizó los cortos Chacón maravilla (1982), con Marco Antonio Rodríguez y María Manuela Vivanco, y Así pensamos (1983). Codirigió y editó Los mangles se van (1984), mejor película educativa en el VI Festival de Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana. 

    Luego, escribió y dirigió el largometraje La tigra (1990), premiada con la India Catalina a la Mejor Película y Mejor Ópera Prima en el XXX Festival Internacional de Cine y TV de Cartagena (1990); obteniendo distinciones por su fotografía y música en el 7º Festival de Cine de Bogotá; en el Festival de Trieste, Italia, se lleva Mejor Guión y Mejor Banda Sonora y el “Quilla” en el 2º Encuentro de Cineastas Andinos.

    Dirigió y produjo el largometraje Entre Marx y una mujer desnuda (1996), Premio Coral a la Mejor Dirección Artística en el Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano y en el Festival de Trieste, Italia. También fue productor, por la parte ecuatoriana, de Proof of Life, 2001, dirigida por Taylor Hackford y protagonizada por Meg Ryan y Rusell Crowe. Otras películas suyas son Cara o cruz (2003) y 1809 - 1810 mientras llega el día. En 2004 trabajó como actor en  la película Crónicas, de Sebastián Cordero.

    Uno de sus últimos desempeños ha sido la impartición de talleres en la Escuela de Cine y Actuación en Quito."Hacer cine, dice Luzuriaga, no es una tarea fácil. Se requiere de trabajo y conocimiento especializado y tratar de coordinarlo es muy complejo, especialmente considerando que vivimos en Ecuador, donde no existe experiencia cinematográfica. Llegar a la excelencia en un país sin tradición fílmica es difícil, pero ése es el reto", recalca.



    Camilo Luzuriaga, film director, producer and screenplay, was born in Loja, Ecuador in 1953. Luzuriaga was a theater actor at the Ollanty Group from 1971 to 1976 and later he would devote to the photography.

    He worked as photographer since 1971 with some individual photographic exhibitions. In this field he was the organizer of the first national contemporary photography exhibition in 1982. He was photography professor at Art Faculty of Central University  of Ecuador from 1982 to 1987, and professor of image at the Architecture and Disign Faculty at the Ecuador Catholic University since 1994. He has also taught at the film and performance workshop of the Grupo Cine (Film Group).

    Luzuriaga is one of the few Ecuadorean, not to say the only one, who against all odds produced films in Ecuador and who has been devoted to this art in his country for many years. In 1977 he directed Tierra Cañari, his first documentary short film. From the 1980 on, he became the most active Ecuadorean director among others film he made the shorts Chacón maravilla (1982), with Marco Antonio Rodriguez and María Manuela Vivanco, and Así pensamos (1983). He codirected and edited Los mangles se van (1984), best educational film at Havana Latin American VI Film Festival.  

    Luzuriaga wrote and directed the feature film La tigra (1990). Awarded with the India Catalina for the Best Film and for the Best First Work at the Cartagena International Film and TV Festival; it also was awarded for photography, and music at the7th Bogota  Film Festival; and in Triesty Film Festival in Italy. It was also an award-winner for the screenplay and the Best Soundtrack and the Quilla at the Second Andean Film Meeting.

    The filmmaker directed and produced feature film Entre Marx y una mujer desnuda (1996), Coral award for the Best Art Direcction at the International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema and also awarded at the Trieste Film Festival, Italy, He was the Ecuadorian producer of Proof of Life, 2001, directed by Taylor Hackford and with Meg Ryan and Rusell Croww in the leadin roles. Among his feature films are Cara o Cruz (2003) and 1809-1810 mientras llega el día. In the 2004, he worked as actor in the film Crónicas by Sebastian Cordero.

    One of his most recent activities has been different workshops in the  Quito Acting and Film School (Escuela de Cine y Actuación de Quito). “Make film, says Luzuriaga, it is not an easy task. it enquirers a lot of effort and a specialized knowledge and try to coordinate both of them is  very complex, specially considering that we live in Ecuador, where there is not film experience. To achieve the excellence in a country without film tradition is very difficult, but that is the challenge”, he emphasized.

    He maintains that of the problem of the Ecuadorian film is the absence of state support, even when works as La tigra and Entre Marx y una mujer desnuda were shut with the state support, these collaborations were granted thanks to the will and after many bureaucratic procedures and to a great extent they were depending of the will and sensibility of some government employees´.

    His films La Tigra, Entre Marx y una mujer desnuda and Cara o Cruz are in DVD format in the United States distributed by Pygmalion Media LLC. Tanks to his career Camilo Luzuriaga is one of the most representative filmmaker of the Latin American cinema. film.
