Gabriela David (1960-) was born in the city of Mar del Plata, Argentina. She is the eldest daughter of the beloved and well-known filmmaker Mario David, and of a ceramist and visual artist. The passion for art was transmitted to her by both parents, so Gabriela was in contact with cinema and visual arts since she was a child. After attending the School of Fine Arts, she decided to make a career in the cinema.

She made four short films, two of them on Super 8: Ensayo and Para que todo cambie and they were followed by Romance en la puerta oeste de la ciudad (1979) and Tren gaucho (1989), for which she also wrote the script. Earlier, she was assistant director in La rabona (1978), La cruz invertida (1985) and Tango Bar (1987), the last one is an international co-production with Raúl Juliá, Ruben Juárez and Valeria Lynch.

Tren Gaucho was a more conscious work made in 16 mm and color. It was an adaptation of a homonymous story by Juan José Manaut, but when she was about to debut in the long feature film, her daughter was born, and the times of Menem’s government arrived with its economic downturn. She devoted herself to teaching, and so arose the script for his first long feature film.

Facing a promising future after the release of her feature film Taxi, un encuentro (2000), written and produced by herself and selected for competitions in major international festivals, she received the warm support of her colleagues and the public. The film tells the confidential story of a thief that finds a wounded teenager one night, while he is driving a stolen taxi through the streets of the city.
