Víctor Gaviria nació en Medellín en 1955. Interrumpió sus estudios universitarios para incursionar en la literatura y luego emprender su profesión definitiva, el cine de corte social, con actores no profesionales y locaciones auténticas. En una primera etapa experimental dirigió cortometrajes como Buscando tréboles (o poema visual sobre niños no videntes) (1979), que capta imágenes conmovedoras y poéticas sobre la vida cotidiana de estos chicos. Más tarde vinieron tres mediometrajes del período Focine: Los habitantes de la noche (o astucias de jóvenes noctámbulos), La vieja guardia (o nostalgia de pensionados del ferrocarril) y Los músicos (o caminantes montañeros en tiempos violentos).
Su primer largometraje fue Rodrigo D: no futuro (o muchachos de las comunas nororientales) (1990), sobre jóvenes que sucumbieron frente a la violencia sin haber cumplido los veinte años. Gaviria expuso el drama ensañado en la juventud y recreó un pequeño universo neorrealista en torno a la escalada violenta atravesada por Medellín.
Con La vendedora de rosas (1998), libre adaptación de un cuento de Hans Christian Andersen, Gaviria participó por segunda vez en la selección competitiva de Cannes. Describía crudamente los castigos infligidos por adultos y el mal ejemplo de padres que sin piedad golpean a sus chicos. La película desbordó ciertas atmósferas callejeras y nocturnas teñidas de frustraciones, con guiños fatídicos para plasmar la verdad dramatizada del abandono.
Sumas y restas es el tercer largometraje del poeta y cineasta antioqueño. Coproducción colombo-española, con participantes adultos que se acoplan a su estilo dramatizado muy ceñido a los hechos. Guión rico en matices, escrito por el actor Hugo Restrepo, capaz de retratar el mundillo demencial del narcotráfico y las sucias inversiones de vastos sectores de clase media.

Víctor Gaviria (1955-) was born in Medellín. He abandoned his university studies to make an incursion in literature and, after that, began his definitive career as director of socially oriented films with non-professional actors and shot in real locations. In a first experimental period, he directed short films as Buscando Tréboles o Poema visual sobre los niños no videntes (1979), which filmed touching and poetic images of the every day life of these children. Later came three medium length film from the period when he worked with Focine: Los habitantes de la noche o astucias de jóvenes noctámbulos, La vieja guardia o nostalgia de pensionados del ferrocarril and Los músicos o caminantes montañeros en tiempos violentos
His first feature film was Rodrido D o Muchachos de las colinas nororientales (1990) about a young men that succumbed to violence before they reach the age of twenty, Gaviria showed the drama that plagued the youth and recreated a small neorealistic universe that reflected the escalation of violence that suffered the Colombia city of Medellín.
With La vendedora de rosas, a free adaptation of a Hans Christain Andersen´s tale. Gaviria took part for the second time at the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival. The film describes in all its crude reality the punishments inflicted to the children by the adults and the terrible case of parents that mercilessly beat their children. The film went to the extreme visions of certain street and night-time atmospheres, filled with frustration and fateful gimmicks to express the dramatized true of neglect.
Sumas y restas was the third feature film by the poet and filmmaker from Antioquia. The film was a Colombia-Spanish coproduction with adult participant that fit into a narrative style that is very close to real events. the film screenplay, full of rich details, was written by the actor Hugo Restrepo and was able to portray the demented inner circle of drug trafficking and the related dirty money investment of wide sectors of the Colombian middle class.
