    Nació en Santiago de Chile, en 1941. Se sintió atraído por el cine documental en su adolescencia, hacia 1960. En esos años vió algunas películas de Chris Marker, Frédéric Rossif, Louis Malle, etc. Luego estudió cinematografía en el Instituto Fílmico de la Universidad Católica de Chile y más tarde en la Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía de Madrid, donde obtuvo el título de director-realizador en 1970. Escribió crítica de cine en El Mercurio de Valparaíso, entre 1985 y 2000.

    En 1971 dirigió su primer largo documental, El primer año (sobre los primeros 12 meses del gobierno de Allende), que se estrenó ese mismo año en las salas comerciales de Chile. En 1973, Chris Marker le prestó valiosa ayuda a Guzmán cuando le proporcionó los rollos de película virgen para filmar La batalla de Chile (una trilogía documental de 4 horas y media sobre el último año de Allende). El rodaje de este filme se prolongó hasta el mismo día del golpe de estado.

    A partir de ese momento, Guzmán estuvo preso en el Estadio Nacional de Santiago por espacio de quince días. Cuando pudo recuperar la libertad se llevó todos los rollos hasta Europa. Allí empezó a buscar, junto con Chris Marker, los medios económicos para montar la película. La ayuda llegó desde el Instituto Cubano de Cinematografía (ICAIC), que mantenía buenas relaciones con Marker. Entonces Guzmán viajó hasta La Habana y terminó la película varios años más tarde.

    La batalla de Chile ganó seis grand-prix en Europa y América Latina. Fue distribuida en las salas comerciales de 35 países. La revista norteamericana Cineaste la nominó como uno de los diez mejores filmes políticos del mundo. Después Guzmán siguió realizando documentales en España y Francia.

    En 1987 realizó En nombre de Dios (Grand-prix, Florencia 87); entre 1990 y 1992, La cruz del sur (Gran-prix , Marseille 92), sobre la religiosidad popular en América Latina. En 1995, Pueblo en vilo, sobre la memoria histórica de una aldea mexicana. Le siguieron otros títulos como La memoria obstinada (Grand-prix, Florencia 1997) sobre la amnesia política chilena; La isla de Robinson Crusoe (1999), sobre la isla chilena del mismo nombre; El caso Pinochet (2001), sobre el juicio contra el ex dictador en Londres (Grand-prix, Marseille 01); Madrid (2002), sobre la capital de España y finalmente Salvador Allende, en 2004 (Selección Oficial en Cannes).

    Es profesor de cine documental en algunas escuelas de Europa y Latinoamérica. Ha sido jurado en numerosos certámenes. Fundador del Festival Documental de Santiago que realiza con la ayuda de un grupo de jóvenes desde 1997 y director, desde su fundación en 1977, del Festival Internacional de Cine de Valparaíso.

    Imparte clases de Historia del Cine y Teoría del Cine en la carrera de Comunicación Audiovisual del Duoc UC de Viña del Mar, en el Departamento de Estudios Humanísticos de la Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, así como en la Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez.




    Patricio Guzmán, born in 1941 in Santiago, Chile, was attracted by the documentary film since a young age in the 1960s. During this time, he saw some films by Chris Marker, Frédéric Rossif, Louis Malle, etc. He studied film at the film Institute (Instituto Fílmico) of the Catholic University of Chile (Universidad Católica de Chile) and later at the Official Film School (Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía) of Madrid, where he received a degree of director-filmmaker in 1970. He wrote film critic at the newspaper El Mercurio of  Valparaíso from 1985 to 2000.

    In 1971 Guzmán directed his first feature length documentary film, El primer año (on the first twelve month of  Salvador Allende government), which was released theatrically this same year. in 1973, Chris Marker offered a valuable help tp Guzmán as he offered him the film stock to shoot La batalla de Chile (a four hours and a half documentary trilogy on the last year of president Salvador Allende government). The shooting of this film lasted until the very day of the coup d´etat.

    Since this moment Guzmán was imprisoned at the Estadio Nacional (National Stadium) of Santiago for fifteen days. When he recovers freedom he took all the reels to Europe. There alongside Chris Marker found financing to edit the film. The support came from the  Cuban Institute of the Film Art and Industry (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos), ICAIC, which already had  an excellent relations with Marker. Then Guzmán traveled to Havana and finished his film there some years after he had shot it.

    La batalla de Chile won six main Prizes in Europe and Latin America. It was distributed at commercial movie theaters of 35 countries. The American magazine Cineaste selected the film as one of the best ten political film of the world. Guzman continued directing documentaries in Spain and France.

    In 1987 he directed En nombre de Dios (Grand-prix, Florence 87), from 1990 to 1992, La cruz del sur (Gran-prix , Marseille 92), on popular religiosity in Latin America. In 1995, he directed Pueblo en vilo, about the historical memory of a Mexican Town. Other documentaries followed as La memoria obstinada (Grand-prix, Florence 97), about the Chilean political amnesia; La isla de Robinson Crusoe (1999), about the Chilean island of the same name. In 2001, the filmmaker filmed El caso Pinochet, on the trial against the former dictator Augusto Pinochet in London (Grand-prix, Marseille, 2001). A year later he made Madrid, about the Spanish capital and finally Salvador Allende (2004 that was part of the Official Selection of Cannes.

    He is documentary film professor at some European and Latin American Schools. He has been judge at numerous international film events. The filmmaker was founder of the Documentary Film Festival (Festival Documental) of Santiago, an event that is celebrated with the support of a group of young filmmakers since 1997; he is also director since its creation  in 1977 of the Valparaiso International Film Festival (Festival Internacional de Cine de Valparaíso).

    Guzmán teaches film history and theory at the Audiovisual Communication studies at the Duoc UC of Viña del Mar and at the Department of Humanities (Departamento de Estudios Humanísticos) of the Technical University (Universidad Técnica) Federico Santa María, as well as at the Adolfo Ibáñez University.
