Manuel Pérez Estremera comenzó su carrera en el mundo del cine escribiendo en revistas especializadas como Nuestro Cine. En los años setenta trabajó como ayudante de dirección en diferentes largometrajes —se vinculó especialmente con el cineasta Fernando Fernán-Gómez— y dirigió para Televisión Española (TVE), diversos documentales. En 1983 fundó el programa de información cinematográfica Fila 7, el que dirigió hasta 1986. Trabajó posteriormente en los departamentos de Proyectos y Producción Externa de TVE. A lo largo de todos estos años publicó algunos libros, como Nuevo cine latinoamericano (1969) y Correspondencia inacabada con Arturo Ripstein (1985).
Entre 1992 y 1994 Pérez Estremera dirigió el Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián, en España. Más tarde se convirtió en director de los programas de cine de Canal +, entre ellos Magacine, para después convertirse en el responsable de los numerosos proyectos de cine español en los que participaba esta cadena. Su trabajo en Canal + lo alternó con la Cátedra de Producción que ejerció en la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, desde 1997. En 2004 se convirtió en Director General del Instituto de Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales (ICAA) de España. Al año siguiente fue nombrado Director de Televisión Española, cargo que ha ocupado hasta enero de 2007.
Ha recibido múltiples reconocimientos a lo largo de su carrera. Por ejemplo, el Premio Ciudad de Huelva, otorgado en 2004, en el marco del Festival de Cine Iberoamericano de Huelva. Pérez Estremera ha estado ligado a este certamen desde sus primeras ediciones, habiendo participado como miembro del Patronato de la Fundación Cultural Festival de Cine Iberoamericano de Huelva, mientras ostentaba el cargo de Director General del ICAA. En 2006 recibió el Premio Coral de Honor, concedido por el Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana, Cuba, en reconocimiento a su carrera y sus esfuerzos por impulsar el cine latinoamericano. En 2007 fue homenajeado, junto con el productor Camilo Vives, en el Festival de Lima.
Manuel Pérez Estremera (1944-) began his career in the world of the cinema writing in specialized magazines as Nuestro Cine. In the 1970s, he worked as assistant director in different feature films - it was especially linked to the filmmaker Fernando Fernán-Gómez - and directed for the Spanish Television (TVE) different documentary films. In 1983, he founded the program of film information Fila 7, which he directed up to 1986. He worked later in the departments of Projects and External Production of TVE. Throughout this year he published some books, such as Nuevo cine latinoamericano (1969) y Correspondencia inacabada con Arturo Ripstein (1985).
Between 1992 and 1994, Pérez Estremera directed San Sebastian International Film Festival, Spain. Later he became director of the film programs of Canal +, among them Magacine, to become later the responsible for the numerous projects of Spanish cinema in which this network participates. Their work in Channel + alternated with his chair at the Production Department at the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba since 1997. In 2004, he became General Director of the Film Institute of Audiovisual Arts (Instituto de Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales, ICAA) of Spain. The next year he was appointed Director of the Spanish Television, a position he held until January 2007.
He has received many recognitions along his career, such as, the Prize of the City of Huelva, granted in 2004 within the Ibero-American Film Festival of Huelva. Estremera has been bound to this contest from its first editions, having participated as member of the Patronage of the Cultural Foundation of the Ibero-American Film Festival of Huelva, while he held the position of General Director of the ICAA. In 2006, he received the Coral award of Honor, granted by the International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema of Havana, Cuba, in recognition to his career and efforts in the promotion of the Latin American cinema. In 2007, he was recognized together with the producer Camilo Vives at the Festival of Lima.
