    Nace en Puerto Rico el 23 de abril de 1938. Director, guionista y productor. Cursó estudios en City College de Nueva York, Pratt Institute de Art y Arquitectura, y a la Academia americana de Artes Dramáticas. Fue el creador del WNET, la serie de la televisión pública Realidades. Fue miembro del staff de State University of New York Collage Old Westbury, y profesor visitante del Departamento de Estudios de Comunicación, en la Universidad de California, Los Ángeles.  Autor de numerosos guiones para la televisión y el cine.  Recibió una nominación al Emmy Award por el guión del  docudrama Voz de la Raza.  Fue miembro del Consejo Superior de la Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano.

    Forman parte de su filmografía, entre otras, las siguientes obras: 
    El Oxcart: la historia sigue la migración de una familia que emigra de una zona rural de Puerto Rico a la selva del asfalto de la ciudad de Nueva York.
    La historia de Roberto Clemente: documental de la  una hora que resalta la vida y carrera de uno de los más grandes iconos de béisbol,  y los eventos que llevan a su muerte trágica.
    La vida y poesía de Julia de Burgos: Multipremiado docudrama que reúne la vida y poesía de una de las más notables poetisas de América Latina.
    Los nacionalistas: Documental sobre la historia del Partido Nacionalista Puertorriqueño, y los sucesos que tuvieron lugar en el Congreso de los Estados Unidos, en marzo, 1954. El filme se concentra en la vida del líder y presidente del Partido, Pedro Albizu Campos. 
    Fiesta musical: documental musical que incluye tres conciertos: uno dedicado al legendario pianista y compositor Eddie Palmieri, otro donde se destaca la música del La Nueva Trova de Cuba, la nueva canción de América Latina, y concluye con un concierto de Jazz tributo a Count Basie. 
    Destino manifiesto: documental dramático basado en los eventos que llevan a la Guerra de Hispanoamérica de 1898.
    Papá Hemingway: filmada en l992 en Cuba, la película recorre la vida y obra de Ernest Hemingway durante sus años en España y Cuba. 
    El segundo viaje: Largometraje de ficción basado en los eventos del segundo viaje al Nuevo Mundo, como los reflejó en su diario Cristóbal Colón.




    José García was born on April 23, 1938 in Puerto Rico and died in 2004. He attended City College of New York, Pratt Institute of Art and Architecture, and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He was the originator of the WNET Public Television Series Realidades. He was on the faculty at State University of New York College at Old Westbury, and a visiting faculty member at California State University at Los Angeles, Communications Studies Department. He was a member of the Superior Council of the New Latin American Cinema Foundation.

    Jose Garcia worked as a freelance Producer/Writer and produced programs for Public Television distribution. The following are among the programs he wrote, directed, and produced:

    The Oxcart is an original adaptation of the award winning play by renowned author Rene Marques. This was the pilot program of the WNET Realidades series. The story follows the migration of a family who travels from the rural countryside of Puerto Rico to the asphalt jungle of New York City. "Why do they leave the land in search of a dream that they may never find?” asks the author at the beginning of the film.

    The Roberto Clemente story is a one-hour documentary that highlights the life and career of one of baseball's greatest icons and the events that lead to his tragic death. "He gave his life so that others could live.", quoted one of his teammates upon learning of his death in a plane crash delivering food relief to victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua. It was aired as part of the Realidades series.

    The life and poetry of Julia de Burgos is an award winning docudrama brings together the life and poetry of one of Latin America's most notable poets. Filmed in Puerto Rico and New York, the story follows the poet as a child, young student, teacher and writer. "It must be from here, deep into Welfare Island that I give my farewell to the world among my comrades of silence.” (Farewell to Welfare Island - Julia de Burgos).

    The nationalists is half-hour documentary that  surveys the history of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party and the background to the shooting incident in the U.S. Congress by four nationalists in March, 1954. The film focuses on the history of the party's president and relentless leader, Pedro Albizu Campos. La Patria es valor y sacrificio. It was aired as part of the realidades series.

    Festival musical is a musical documentary spotlighting  three concerts that includes the legendary Latino Salsa music composer and pianist, Eddie Palmieri. Another concert highlights the music of the Cuban La Nueva Trova, the new song of Latin America, and concludes with a Jazz concert tribute to Count Basie.

    Manifestdestiny is a dramatic documentary based on the events leading to the Spanish-America War of 1898. Puerto Rican patriot, Eugenio Maria de Hostos stated at the time that Spain had no right to include Puerto Rico as a war booty as a condition of surrender in the Paris Peace Treaty of December, 1898 because Puerto Rico was already an autonomous island. This film was selected for presentation at the 1998 Huesca Film Festival in Spain. "One Hundred Years later we are still debating the same issue: The right for independence and self-determination for the people of Puerto Rico.”

    Papa Hemingway was filmed in Cuba in l992, the film is based on the life and works of Ernest Hemingway during his years in Spain and Cuba. "He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.” says the author about the protagonist of his story The Old Man and the Sea.  Jose Garcia wrote and directed this film produced by Bilingual Educational Films of Los Angeles, California.

    The second Voyage is a dramatic film based on the events of the second voyage to the New World as written in the diary of Christopher Columbus.
