    Las dos impresionantes horas que dura Ómnibus 174 (2002), uno de los mejores documentales brasileños del primer lustro del siglo XXI, se consagran a contar el ataque de un ómnibus por un joven armado y el circo mediático que rodeó a este suceso, además de presentar una reflexión vertical sobre la realidad social del Brasil contemporáneo.

    El realizador, guionista y productor de Ómnibus 174 es nativo de Río de Janeiro. Comenzó su carrera como productor del filme de ficción Boca de oro (1990), luego escribió y produjo La gente de Charcoal y codirigió varios documentales para el canal National Geographic, lo cual le permitió ganar en oficio, experiencia y habilidades en el manejo del instrumental expresivo, particularmente la fotografía y el sonido, tan sabiamente manipulados en Ómnibus 174.

    Padilha realizó el documental Malvada niñez, que contó con similar acogida a la de sus anteriores obras, testimonios elocuentes de dramáticas realidades donde a veces, a fuerza de verismo, se confunde el testimonio con la escenificación y la realidad con la representación.

    Otro título de su filmografía  que fue muy bien acogido por el público es Tropa de élite (2007) la cual escribió, produjo y dirigió, y fue ganadora del Oso de Oro en la Berlinale del 2008, entre muchos otros premios.




    José Padilha (1967-) graduated in business economics at PUC-Río. He attended courses of Political Economics, English literature, International Politics at Oxford, United Kingdom. He was founder of the production company Zazen Produções.

    The impressive two hours´ running time of Ómnibus 174 (2002) -one of the best Brazilian documentaries of the first decade of the Twenty-first Century- are dedicated to tell the story of the armed attack of a young man to a bus, the media´s coverage that surround this event and, in addition, to offer an enlightening reflection on the social reality of contemporary Brazil.

    The filmmaker, screenwriter and producer of Ônibus 174, is a Río born Brazilian. He began his film career as producer of the narrative feature film Boca de oro (1990), then he wrote and produced La gente de Charcoal and co-directed some documentaries for the National Geographic channel, which allowed him to accomplish experience and expertise in ussing the expressive potential of the technical media, specially photography and sound, which were so smartly used in Ómnibus 174.

    Padilla made the documentary, Malvada niñez, that had a similar reception to his previous woks, convincing testimonies of dramatics realities, so realistic, that in them are confused testimony and staging, reality and representation. Another of his films that had a good audience reception was Tropa de élite (2007), a film that he wrote, produced and directed, and was the winner of the Golden Bear of the Berlin Film Festival in 2008.
